Dr. A.K.S. Gopalan

Dr. A.K.S. Gopalan was the Director, Space Applications Centre during 1998 - 2002. Earlier he was Director, Advanced Data Processing Research Institute (ADRIN), Dept. of Space, Govt. of India, Hyderabad during May 1989 - March 1995 and was directing Research and Development in the advanced areas of Image Analysis, Geographic Information Systems (GIS), Photogrammetry/Cartography, Expert Systems/Artificial Intelligence, Microwave Remote Sensing and high throughput Image Analysis and Mapping Systems. Born on October 10, 1942 at Tirunelveli, Tamil Nadu, he obtained his M.Sc. degree in Physics in 1964 from Annamalai University, Tamilnadu and M. Tech. degree in Electronics in 1966 from Birla Institute of Tech. & Science, Pilani. Dr. Gopalan obtained Ph.D. in Meteorology & Oceanography in 2001 from Andhra University.

Joined ISRO in 1970 and worked in the field of Space Communications till 1974. He switched over to the field of Remote Sensing with special reference to Image Processing. Special Systems developed are IRS Data Products System as Associate Project Director, IRS Project which is operational at National Remote Sensing Agency (NRSA), Hyderabad and ISROVISION System which is marketed by HCL Limited and M/s SPECK Systems, Hyderabad.

He has served as a Member/Chairman of a number of national level scientific committees including Survey of India (SOI)/Department of Science and Technology (DST) Committees for map digitisation project and Cartographic Data Exchange Format. Has published and presented a number of papers in national and international conferences/proceedings. He was elected as President of Indian National Cartographic Association for the year 1993-94.
