  • State &District Wheat Production forecast for 2009-10 given for Haryana, MP, Rajasthan, Punjab, Bihar and UP using IRS P6 LISS-III data.
  • Study on optimum spectral resolution for detection of carbon dioxide using simulation modeling Preliminary investigation suggest better than 1.0 nm resolution is required to detect CO 2 concentration using 1600 nm spectral band.
  • A new method of deriving the Land Surface Temperature (LST) from INSAT-VHRR single-thermal-channel involving physics based simulations over varying atmospheric and land conditions was developed.
  • Under National Rabi Rice Project (FASAL), three dates Radarsat 2 ScanSAR Narrow B dual polarisation data analysed & forecast for Rabi rice released on April 05, 2010.
  • Monthly scale nitrate, SST, chlorophyll & water quality data interpreted for the year 2009 around the coast of Pondicherry, Cuddalore, Parangipettai & Nagapattinam. Seasonal relationship observed between the nitrate, SST & chlorophyll in Tamilnadu coastal water.
  • Second forecast of National Wheat Production for 2009-10 completed on March 3, 2010 . The acreage and production is 28.19 M ha and 80.01 M t respectively, showing overall increase of 4.5% and 8.7% respectively compared to 2008-09 forecast.
  • The second forecast of National Rapeseed Mustard Production carried out. The acreage and production is 5.76 M ha and 6.21 M t respectively.
  • Two cruises organized for sea truth data collection as part of OS-2 Validation and Application projects; one onboard R.V. Sagar Sampada (SS-273) during March 05-13, 2010 in Arabian Sea and other onboard R.V. Samudra Kaustubh (ST-206) in the coastal waters of Bay of Bengal during March 07-13, 2010.
  • Bio-optics laboratory was establish at SAC and formally inaugurated by Director, SAC on March 02, 2010 to support programme of Ocean Colour Mission.

  • The first forecast of all India winter potato production issued. The acreage and production is 1.35 Mha & 24.4 Mt respectively using AWiFS data & meteorological parameters.
  • The onion & garlic area at block level carried out for 4 districts of Gujarat as 64,013 ha and 44,229 ha respectively.
  • Wetland Atlases at 1: 50, 000 scale for seven states (carried under the NWIA project) released at a function on 2 nd February (World Wetland Day) at Jammu by honorable Minister Shri Jairam Ramesh .

High catch contours found in the areas of –ve SSHa, comparatively low temperature and high chlorophyll concentrations. Vice-versa was observed for poor catch contours.
  • Ocean surface wind vector products from initial data of OS-2 Scatterometer generated & compared with ECMWF model surface winds.
  • Second forecast of kharif rice estimates made using 3-date Radarsat ScanSAR data for 12 states & aggregated to country. Acreage estimates formally released to Ministry of Agriculture on 1st October.
  • Runoff modelling using IITM-RCM data for projected climate scenario for 2085 carried out for Indian basins.
  • Interaction effect of doubled Carbon di oxide & temperature rise on productivity of four cereal crops analysed. Results indicated that adverse effect of rising temperature could be compensated through doubled Carbon di oxide up to 1ºC in pearl millet, up to 2ºC in rice and wheat, up to 3ºC in maize.
  • Model developed for estimation of ‘BPH' pest severity occurrence in rabi rice crop of A.P. using indices derived from AWiFS & MODIS data along with field measured data. Strong relationship found between multidate LSWI with BPH severity count.
  • First day geophysical data products of OS-2 OCM, LAC generated for September 24, 2009. OCM-2 data processed for atmospheric correction procedure and normalized water-leaving radiance for first six bands of OCM generated. Using these data sets chlorophyll- a, T SM, vertical diffuse attenuation and aerosol optical depth maps produced for Open Ocean & coastal waters of Gujarat.
  • OCM-2 data for GAC processed in a fully automated manner and global chlorophyll-a map generated for last week of September 2009.
  • Sun-glint occurrence simulation done for OCEANSAT-2 OCM global passes for spacecraft yaw rotation option of 30 degrees.
  • Kavaratti CAL-VAL site data used successfully for validation of 27 th Sept., 2009 OCM-II radiance products. The OCM-II radiances compared with computed Top-of-atmosphere radiances of eight spectral bands using in-situ measured water leaving radiances, aerosol optical depths and other parameters of the site.
  • A MoU between ISRO and ECMWF on exchange of data from Oceansat-2 and Model Analyses and Forecasts signed.
  • The first forecast of kharif rice estimates were made using 2-date Radarsat ScanSAR
    data for 12 states & aggregated to country. The acreage estimates were released to

  • New approach developed to automatically determine the centre of cyclone using IR image, image processing techniques and genetic algorithm.
  • The total GHG emission from Indian livestock using 2003 census data is estimated as 247.2 Tg in terms of CO2 equivalent. Future projections of livestock based GHG emissions indicated that, the livestock population is expected to increase by 89 million (taking current growth rate) resulting in 18.35 percent increase by year 2021.
  • The SAR polarimetric parameters like entropy, volume scattering component and copolarise index were estimated for maize and cotton crop. They were found to be suitable for crop growth studies.
  • Acreage estimates of Jute crop made using multi temporal Radarsat ScanSAR Wide 2 data for the states of Assam, Bihar & West Bengal. The acreage estimates were formally released to the MoA on August 04.
  • Atlas of snow cover map for Ganga and Satluj basin for year 2007-2008 prepared.
  • Algorithm for median filtering developed for post processing of Oceansat-II OCM derived chlorophyll images. These algorithms will reduce the random speckle noise some time observed in OCM geophysical products.

LLRI topography data plotted on a map along with various lunar basins. Humboldtianum basin, Schrödinger basin & South Pole regions were selected for further detailed analysis. Data distribution, image and 3D perspective view maps were prepared for the above three regions and also compared with SELENE data.
   
Total suspended matter (TSM) algorithm developed for Oceansat-II OCM data making use of 620 nm spectral band, tested with in-situ data collected using Hyperspectral radiometer for coastal waters.  The TSM retrieval for 620 nm band was found to be better when compared to algorithms making use of 670 nm band. Overall coefficient of determination (r2) increased to 0.91 using 620 nm band, compared to 0.86 when 670 nm band was used for TSM concentration range 10-150mg/L.
   
Impact of rise in temperature on crop duration, yield, biomass and water use of wheat studied using CropSyst model using experimental field data for Delhi.
   
Nitrous oxide emissions (N2O) from animal waste management systems estimated for livestock categories viz. cattle (dairy and non-dairy), pigs & poultry using recent census and IPCC default emission coefficients.
   
Real time daily forecasts for 48 hours from the WRF model on experimental basis are being provided for the western region of India.
   
The NNRMS portal with improved map visualization facilities using MapGuide software with PostGres SQL RDBMS backend developed and demonstrated.

A simulation study for major Cropping systems of Punjab (Rice-Wheat, Cotton-Wheat & Maize-Wheat), on effect of CO2 and Temperature rise on crop yield carried out.
   
Long-term data on Albedo-rainfall feedback study showed that the trend in India’s mean annual rainfall closely matches with the variation of albedo of Himalayan snow cover.
   
Preparation of snow cover maps, charts & statistics for Indus volume I & II and Satluj, Chenab and Ganga basins completed for year 2007-08.
   
Detailed presentation on “Perambalur Master Plan” prepared using Geomatics Technology made to Minister for Information and Urban Development, Govt. of Tamilnadu, Chennai.
   
L-band SAR data from ALOS and C-band SAR data from Radarsat-II evaluated for Biomass estimation. The biomass saturation limits for C- and L-band SAR found to be at 80 & 120 t/ha, respectively.
   

OPERATION OF MSS TYPE-C HUB

Identification & mapping of glacier lakes using Landsat TM data of 1988 and IRS AWiFS data of 2005 in Himalayan region for Nepal and Bhutan carried out. An atlas-cum-report of images & maps showing supra-glacial lakes and moraine damned lakes produced.
   
Glacier mass balance for hydrological year ending 2006 for Chandra, Bhaga, Miyar, Dhauli ganga, Gauriganga, Alaknanda & Bhagirathi sub-basins for year 2006 completed.
   
Aerial survey campaign including installation, flights & dismantling from May 11-17, 2009 for simultaneous flights of AIMS, HySI-A and TMC-A completed. Synchronous with aerial  flight campaign (collecting AIMS, HYSI and TMC data) conducted over the manganese & base metals mineralized zone in Khandiya – Shivrajpur region of Panchmahals and Vadodara districts of Gujarat, hyperspectral data collected in field during May 13-15, 2009.
   
A detailed presentation on Procedure used for CAPE / FASAL project for Crop Production Forecasting made to Prof. Vaidyanathan Committee at NASC Complex, New Delhi on May 5-6, 2009.

An approach has been developed to map risk levels of different segments of Tamilnadu coast based on Coastal Vulnerability Index (CVI).  A coastal vulnerability map for the Tamilnadu coast was prepared.
   
First forecast of National Wheat Production for 2008-09 season released under the FASAL project using multi-date AWiFS data & weather. Wheat acreage and production were 26.5 Mha and 72.6 Mt respectively
   
Reconnaissance survey carried out in Lunavada & surroundings of Panch Mahals District of Gujarat (~ 4 km * 20 km strip) as part of TMC-Aerial Campaign.
   
Two ship cruises Sagar Kanya SK-256 (February 9-23, 2009) and Sagar Sampada SS-263 (February 27–March 14, 2009) organized to study winter bloom in Northern Arabian Sea.  
   
Geoid and free-air gravity data of Bay of Bengal & Ender by Basin integrated with ship-borne geophysical data to investigate the early evolution of the eastern Indian Ocean.
   
Estimation of glacier retreat using Landsat TM data of 1990 covering Dhauliganga and Gauriganga basins are completed. Report of estimation of glacier retreat of Tista basin from the year 1997 and 2005 is prepared.
   

Vessel Monitoring System (VMS)

Demonstrated real time monitoring of vessels through satellite, AES antenna & VMS system to officials of FSI & Antrix Corporation.

   
All 127 Marine Protected Areas (total 405 maps) of the country that include all Marine National Parks, Marine Sanctuaries, Wild Life Sanctuaries in the coastal zone, Ramsar Coastal wetlands, Marine Biosphere Reserves, Mangrove Notified forests and all the coral reefs of Lakshadweep have been mapped using 2005-07 data.
   
Chandrayaan-1 (Fore, Aft & Nadir) TMC data covering parts of Far-side as well Near-side of the Moon (Orbit No. 798, 280 and 876 ) was interpreted for terrain features and their morphological/structural settings. Significant features like Cobra-Hood, sinuous rile, dissected semi-circular craters etc. have been identified.
   
A bio-optical data collection campaign was organized in the coastal waters of Veraval to collect in-situ parameters on underwater light measurements and other biological, chemical and geological parameters along with CIFT, Veraval during Jan 27-30, 2009.
   
National winter potato production forecast made on February 10, 2009.  Potato acreage and production were 1.32 Mha. &  23.71 Mt, respectively.
   
The final National Mustard Forecast made, based on acreages derived using multi-date AWiFS and single date LISS-III data & yield based on weather data up to Jan 31, 2009. Mustard acreage and production estimates were 6.23 Mha and 6.59 Mt respectively.
   
The angular effect on different categories of vegetation indices studied using CHRIS data for wheat crop at 3 growth stages. The indices found to be least affected by angular effect were SIPI, ZTM, NPCI and mSR705.
   
Global circulation and wave models installed at INCOIS systems for operational forecast.
   
Insitu observations made during severe sea state conditions enroute Antarctica.
   
TMC 3D DEM has been used to study the depth/ diameter ratio of craters on Moon. The mineralogy of the part of Moon derived from the HySI data has been draped on the TMC derived DEM for the area covering Coulomb crater.
   
HySI data analysis of Chandryaan-1 data has been done for Mare Orientale region. Spectral reflectance has been generated for various rocks types and HYSI derived composition maps have been used along with TMC derived DEM to generate 3D view of Mare Oriental region of the Moon. 
   
Snow cover atlas of Chenab basin for year 2005-06 is prepared. Algorithm execution, maps preparation and statistics generation of Tista and Rangit basin for Year 2007-08 is completed.
   
Coastal landuse mapping on 1:25000 scale for the Gujarat State using LISS-IV data of 2005-06 is completed after external Quality Checks.
   
Mangrove community maps for all mangrove areas of India prepared. Quality checks for most of the states completed.  Mapping completed for all coral reefs of India.
   
Query Shells around CZIS (Coastal Zone Information System) are developed for the Orissa and Goa states.
   
Study & analysis of TMC and HYSI data of Chandrayaan-1 are in progress for geological and mineralogical investigations of moon. Data for near as well far side analyzed. Early results of HYSI and TMC data of Chandrayaan-1 for geological investigations of the Lunar surface presented in the "Exposure Meet on Chandrayaan-1 TMC/HYSI data", organized at SAC on December 15, 2008.
   
Query Shells around CZIS (Coastal Zone Information System) Arc/Info developed for the Karnataka & West Bengal states. The shells are developed for retrieval of general information, thematic information and automatic map generation for these states.
   
The ‘Optical Buoys’ were redeployed on CAL-VAL site at Kavaratti after monsoon season. The integrated pair of OPTICAL+MET buoy system is working satisfactorily since December 15, 2008. In-situ measurements of all parameters are now received on hourly basis from the CAL-VAL site using INSAT-3C.
   
State-wise potential yield estimated using calibrated crop coefficient and generated grid weather. Actual yield estimated using potential simulated yield for each of the 10 rice-growing states. The highest yield was obtained in the state of Punjab (3.93 t/ha) followed by AP (3.06 t/ha). Lowest yield was in MP (0.95 t/ha).
   
Mapping of wetlands in the Andaman & Nicobar Islands, Wet Bengal and Meghalaya completed.
   

Development of Satellite based Grid Computing

  • Testing DMSAR Application with 1.5 GB input data and multiple nodes through Ganesh and EDUSAT Satellite with 1 Mbps link using Portal API`s on RRI cluster completed.
   

Initial analysis of TMC and HYSI data of Chandrayaan-1 carried out for geological and mineralogical investigations of moon.

  • HYSI data of Nov. 16, 2008 covering the Lalande Crater on Moon was analysed. 3 D radiance spectra for 450 to 950 nm were generated for all 64 channels. Lunar surface spectra generated for five contrasting surfaces and compared with spectra over similar surfaces derived using Hyperion data sets.
  • New information on details of the craters, major structures depicting faults, grabens, sinuous rilles, could be interpreted. Crater diameter and depth relationship established by studying around 26 craters using photogrammetric techniques.
   
Revised production forecast of kharif rice for 2008-09 for the state of Orissa released. This included revised yield estimation using Water satisfaction model at district level and incorporation of flood damage using two date SAR data acquired after flood (September 24 and September 30). The revised state level acreage & production is 3.8 M ha area and 5.86 M t production. Around 0.52 M ha area was estimated to have completely damaged out of 1.26 M ha inundated. Six districts (out of 30) were affected by flood.
   
Hyperspectral observations of important forest species including bamboo were carried out using handheld ASD FieldSpec instrument for spectral library data base

Analysis of RADARSAT fine beam data of April 22, 25 and May 19, 2008 led to indentification of a buried channel close to Old Talakadu in the Mysore district of Karnataka. Field checks were carried out and the signature was confirmed to be that of a buried channel. [Image]
   
Second forecast (F2) of National Kharif rice for 2008-09 was made on October 15, 2008. All Indian acreage and production are near normal compared to last year RS based F2 forecast (less than 1.0%). All India acreage and production of rice forecast are 35.64 M ha and 78.38 Mt respectively.
   
Hyperspectral observations of twenty-one crops (which were recorded at Anand Agricultural University using handheld spectroradiometer of rang 2500 nm) were processed and spectral plots were generated. The spectral variability between five paddy varieties (GR4 to GR9) was observed at many parts of the spectrum, especially in the NIR region.
   
NRDB - Metadata (State wise) for National GIS project (All states of India), NRIS (Goa and Andaman & Nicobar Islands) was generated for 167 thematic layers on the Master Application server.
   
Real time daily forecast for 48 hours were provided to SDSC, SHAR Meterology Facility for Chandrayaan launch on October 22, 2008. PRWONAM observed data and Kalpana derived winds were assimilated to generate improved initial condition. The experiment started from October 10, 2008 and continued till the launch.
   
MET buoy data on CAL-VAL site at Kavaratti is being collected regularly since the site was operationlized before monsoon season in 2008. Efforts are being made to receive the data every 3 hour through auto file generation system at NDBP.
   
Analysis of QuikSCAT level 2A backscatter data with the new GMF available from JPL completed. A report on assessment of ISRO's wind vector retrieval algorithms prepared based on analysis of QuikSCAT data and NWP model winds. Overall, the ISRO algorithm derived winds were found to be closer to Model winds compared to QuikSCAT finished products winds.
   
A bloom specific chlorophyll algorithm developed using in-situ measurements collected in Arabian Sea.
   
The agromet models for rice crop were updated for 12 major rice growing states (17 met subdivisions) using WWR data (Tx, Tn, RF & Tx - Tn). First forecast of rice yield was made be September 15, for 12 major rice growing states as part of National Rice Forecast. The forecasted yields were in the range 1004 kg/ha (MP) to 3915 kg/ha (Punjab).
   
A glacier expedition was organized from September 02-16, 2008 in Samudra tapu glacier, Lahaul and Spiti valley. Different instruments like GPR, Spectroradiometer, GPS were used to collect data for glaciological studies.
   
Simulation of climate change impact on the runoff over India was modelled using GCM (HadCM3) rainfall data. Initial results indicates less overall runoff in most of the river basins in comparison to current normal climatic runoff. Maximum loss of runoff was observed in the eastern regions like lower part of the Ganga, Brahmini-Baitrani, Subarnarekha, lower partof the Mahanadi basins.
   
First forecast of Kharif rice, ragi, groundnut and jute crops in Orissa State made on August 5, 2008. Acreage of rice ragi, groundnut and jute are 4121, 66.9, 34.7 and 5.4 thousand hectare respectively, which is near normal.
   
Potential yield of rice in Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, Orissa and MP state were simulated for past 10 years (1998-2006) using the calibrated crop coefficient. Regression model was developed for these states using reported yield, time trend and simulated potential yield.
   
Climatological probability maps of cyclone hits for all the states on the east coast of India were generated, for a possible use during planning of satellite launches from SDSC, SHAR during cyclone seasion.
   
First meeting of the GEO Agricultural Monitoring Task (AG-07-03) was held in SAC with Prof. Chris O. Justice, the Director of Research and Professor in Department of Geography at the University of Maryland, USA on August 5 - 6, 2008. A brainstorming was held with concerned scientists of AFEG on 10-Year-Vision of the Task Team, Observation requirements, Data Policy and Needs for Agricultural Monitoring.
