Analysis of QuikSCAT level 2A backscatter data with the new GMF available from JPL completed. A report on assessment of ISRO's wind vector retrieval algorithms prepared based on analysis of QuikSCAT data and NWP model winds. Overall, the ISRO algorithm derived winds were found to be closer to Model winds compared to QuikSCAT finished products winds.
   
A bloom specific chlorophyll algorithm developed using in-situ measurements collected in Arabian Sea.
   
The agromet models for rice crop were updated for 12 major rice growing states (17 met subdivisions) using WWR data (Tx, Tn, RF & Tx - Tn). First forecast of rice yield was made be September 15, for 12 major rice growing states as part of National Rice Forecast. The forecasted yields were in the range 1004 kg/ha (MP) to 3915 kg/ha (Punjab).
   
A glacier expedition was organized from September 02-16, 2008 in Samudra tapu glacier, Lahaul and Spiti valley. Different instruments like GPR, Spectroradiometer, GPS were used to collect data for glaciological studies.
   
Simulation of climate change impact on the runoff over India was modelled using GCM (HadCM3) rainfall data. Initial results indicates less overall runoff in most of the river basins in comparison to current normal climatic runoff. Maximum loss of runoff was observed in the eastern regions like lower part of the Ganga, Brahmini-Baitrani, Subarnarekha, lower partof the Mahanadi basins.
   
First forecast of Kharif rice, ragi, groundnut and jute crops in Orissa State made on August 5, 2008. Acreage of rice ragi, groundnut and jute are 4121, 66.9, 34.7 and 5.4 thousand hectare respectively, which is near normal.
   
Potential yield of rice in Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, Orissa and MP state were simulated for past 10 years (1998-2006) using the calibrated crop coefficient. Regression model was developed for these states using reported yield, time trend and simulated potential yield.
   
Climatological probability maps of cyclone hits for all the states on the east coast of India were generated, for a possible use during planning of satellite launches from SDSC, SHAR during cyclone seasion.
   
First meeting of the GEO Agricultural Monitoring Task (AG-07-03) was held in SAC with Prof. Chris O. Justice, the Director of Research and Professor in Department of Geography at the University of Maryland, USA on August 5 - 6, 2008. A brainstorming was held with concerned scientists of AFEG on 10-Year-Vision of the Task Team, Observation requirements, Data Policy and Needs for Agricultural Monitoring.

Long range forecast for 2008 monsoon season (June-September) rainfall generated using gebetic algorithm. The algorithm predicted 919 mm seasonal rainfall over all India which is 103% of the long-term average.
   
A data base in GIS completed for coastal wetland maps prepared on 1.50, 000 scale using satellite data for the period 1989-1992 for Gujarat, Maharashtra, Goa, Karnatka, Kerala, Tamilnadu, Andra Pradesh, Orissa and Andaman & Nichobar.
   
The sea surface temperature (SST) based nirate algorithm developed around Indian water covering in situ data points from Bay of Arbian Sea. The nirate images have been generated during 1999-2004 period in southern peninsular Indian water.
   
District level forecast of wheat in Punjab, Haryana, Bihar, Rajasthan and Madhya Pradesh made using LISS-III and meteorological yield models.

The second forcast of national level wheat production for 2007-08 season released on March 24, 2008. The estimated acreage was 27.25 M ha and production forecast of 75.90 M tons. Overall increase of 5.1% in production with respect to the final RS based wheat forecast of 2006-07 observed at national level.

The first forecast of national level wheat production for 2007-08 season released on 22nd February using IRS AWiFS data and agromet model. The estimated acreage was 26.61 M ha and production forecast of 75.13 M tons. Overall reduction of 2.5% in acreage and increase of 4.6% in production was observed with respect to final RS based forecasts 2006-07.
